Food Cart Licensing in India: What to Know Before You Start

At a national level, an FSSAI registration or licence is required for anyone manufacturing, storing, distributing or selling food, including mobile vendors — the exact tier (Basic Registration vs. State/Central Licence) depends on your scale of operation.

Beyond FSSAI, most municipalities require a vending or trade licence to operate in a public space, and some cities run designated vending zones under the Street Vendors Act, 2014, which also gives registered vendors certain protections.

If your cart uses LPG or electrical equipment, local fire-safety sign-off may apply, and vehicles used to tow or transport a cart can have their own registration requirements.
